Tailwheel Endorsement
The tailwheel endorsement isn't just a logbook stamp – it's the most effective way to build the stick-and-rudder fundamentals that make better pilots across the board.
What It Is
Per 14 CFR 61.31(i), any pilot operating a tailwheel (conventional gear) aircraft must receive a one-time endorsement from a CFI certifying their competency. Rocky Mountain Pilots specializes in this training – and we believe it's some of the most valuable instruction a pilot can receive, regardless of what they plan to fly long-term.
Flying a tailwheel aircraft demands precise rudder coordination, smooth ground handling, and active pilot input on every takeoff and landing. These skills directly transfer to better crosswind technique, smoother landings, and more confident aircraft control in any plane.
Who It's For
- Certificated pilots (any rating) seeking the tailwheel endorsement
- Pilots who want to fly Citabrias, Cubs, Cessna 170s, or similar aircraft
- Anyone who wants to become a more precise, coordinated pilot
- Mountain flying students (highly recommended as a combination course)
- Pilots planning backcountry or off-airport operations
What You'll Learn
- Ground roll control and directional taxi technique
- Three-point landings (full-stall)
- Wheel landings (speed landings for crosswind and gusty conditions)
- Crosswind takeoff and landing technique
- Go-around procedures from low altitude
- Emergency procedures specific to conventional gear aircraft
- Ground loop avoidance and recovery recognition
Prerequisites
- FAA Private Pilot Certificate (or higher)
- Current medical certificate (or BasicMed)
- Student pilots may begin training with an endorsement from their primary CFI
Training Aircraft
Cessna Super 170B
Primary tailwheel trainer. Classic handling, great visibility, and honest feedback on every landing.
Piper Pacer 20/22
Available for advanced tailwheel students and combination mountain flying courses.
How to Get Started
Most pilots complete the tailwheel endorsement in 5–10 hours of flight time, depending on their background and currency. We'll assess your current skills in the first session and tailor the program from there.
